New Game Card Display Option and Game Sorting

I'm excited to introduce a feature update that not only gives you more control over how you organize your game library but also adds a visually nostalgic touch to your collection!

🎮 Title Screens Display Option: We’re adding a new way to showcase your games! In addition to the existing Box Art and Last Save State views, you can now choose to display your game cards as Title Screens. This feature brings a classic feel to your library, letting you enjoy the original title screens of your favorite games at a glance. You'll need to refresh your metadata for games you've already added.

📚 New Sorting Options: To make your game browsing experience even smoother, we’ve introduced multiple new sorting methods:

  • Sort by Name (A-Z): Easily find games alphabetically.
  • Sort by Last Played: Jump back into the games you’ve played most recently.
  • Sort by Date Added: Quickly locate the latest additions to your collection.

These new sorting options give you more flexibility in organizing and accessing your games exactly how you want.

🚀 Introducing Smart Folders: Effortless Game Organization! 🚀

Say hello to our newest feature that makes organizing your game library easier and more intuitive than ever before—Smart Folders!

🗂 What Are Smart Folders? Smart Folders are dynamic folders that automatically organize your games based on rules you set. These folders populate and update themselves, saving you time and keeping your collection neatly organized without the hassle of manual sorting.

🎮 Create Smart Folders for Any Criteria Want a folder just for your RPG games from the 90s? No problem! Simply set up the rules, and your Smart Folder will instantly fill up with all the matching titles. As you add more games that fit these criteria, they’ll be automatically added to the folder.

🤖 Use AI to Generate Rules from Natural Language Not sure how to set up the rules? We've got you covered! You can use our AI-powered feature to generate the rules from a simple sentence. Just type in something like "RPG games from the 90s," and the AI will create the appropriate rules for you. It’s as easy as that!

📸 Guide: Check out how easy it is to set up a Smart Folder:

  1. Choose Your Folder Type: Start by selecting "Smart Folder" when setting up a new folder.

  2. Set Up Your Rules: Define the criteria for your Smart Folder. For example, to create a folder for RPG games from the 90s, you can set rules based on genre and release year, or let the AI do it for you by typing in a natural language description.

Smart Folders automatically update based on the rules you define, making it incredibly simple to keep your library organized as you continue to grow your collection.

Give it a try and experience a more streamlined way to manage your games!

New Metadata and Boxart System

I'm thrilled to introduce a powerful new feature that not only simplifies how you manage game metadata but also enhances your game collection visually!

🔍 Automatic Metadata Population: When you add a new game, relevant metadata is now automatically fetched and filled in from the extensive Libretro Database. Say goodbye to manual entry and hello to seamless data integration!

🎨 Free Box Art Included: We’re excited to announce that box art is now a completely free feature! Whenever you add or fetch metadata for a game, the system will automatically fetch high-quality box art from the database.

💡 "Use AI" for Missing Fields: Need to fill in any gaps? No problem! Just click the "Use AI" button, and our system will intelligently complete any missing fields, ensuring your game data is as comprehensive as possible.

🎮 Update Existing Game Metadata: Already have games added to your collection? It’s easier than ever to update them! Simply click on the three dots (⋮) on any game card, select “Edit,” and then hit the "Load from DB" button. Your game’s metadata and box art will be instantly refreshed with the latest information.

⚙️ Bulk Metadata & Box Art Update: Want to update the metadata and box art for all your existing games in one go? Head over to Settings > Metadata and simply click "Get/Refresh Metadata." In just one step, your entire game library will be up-to-date with the latest data and visuals from the Libretro Database!

With these updates, managing and showcasing your game library has never been more efficient and visually appealing. Enjoy the ease of automation and let us take care of the details!

Shaders Now Available! 🎉

Hey everyone,

I’m super excited to share that Afterplay now supports shaders across all consoles! We've got almost 20 shaders available, so there's plenty to choose from to enhance your gaming experience.

Here’s a quick rundown of the shader categories:

Interpolation: These shaders smooth out the visuals, reducing pixelation.

CRT: For those who love the classic feel, CRT shaders add scanlines and other effects to mimic the look of old-school CRT monitors. Many games' graphics were even designed with the CRT effect in mind, so these shaders can make them look as they were originally intended.

Handheld: If you’re nostalgic for the days of handheld gaming, these shaders replicate the unique screens of vintage handheld consoles.

My personal favorite is Simpletex. It's almost like playing games on luxury textured paper with a fine pixel grid. It works really well with games that have light backgrounds, like a lot of GB games.

Some of my other favourites from each of the categorie:

  • Handheld: Dot
  • CRT: Zfast
  • Interpolation: Scale FX

New File System and Sync System

I've been working on a new file system based on the origin private file system for a while. It's much more suited to large files that indexdb and is a step towards larger rom files on iOS. You can read about it here https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/File_System_API/Origin_private_file_system

There's also a new syncing system which shows you the progress and the files that need to be synced. This is a step towards bulk adding of files

Improved Core Options 😊

Core options have received a significant upgrade and are now available across all cores 🥳. Options are dynamically generated from the core and allow adjustments without the need for restarts in most instances. Please be aware, though, that a few cores might not clearly indicate which options require a restart.
