Improving payments - the motivation
We want chasing invoices to be a thing of the past. It’s time better spent building relationships and growing sales.
For your long standing customers with credit terms, Sellar provides them with a modern ordering experience; yet allows you to continue invoicing as you always have been.
The part of the equation where we see an opportunity to make your lives easier is with customers who pay pro-forma. Delays between receiving a customer’s order request and collecting payment from them prevents you from fulfilling in a timely manner.
Our existing card payment solution - Stripe-hosted invoices - provides flexibility. Order edits can be made before requesting payment from the customer. But for the vast majority of orders from pro-forma customers who know what they want, this is unnecessary back-and-forth that could be eliminated resulting in you being able to ship orders immediately and get them to your customers faster ⚡️
Here’s what’s changing
With pay-on-checkout, any customer will see the option to pay by card when placing their order. This will be the default option for new customers who find you via the Sellar Market and any existing customers you have assigned pro-forma payment terms.
You’ll continue to invoice your existing customers with credit terms as you do today; unless they self-elect to pay upfront for their order.
What’s important to highlight at this point is that any customer paying for their order by card is paying you. Your company details will be on the invoice we make available to your customer after they have successfully paid for their order.

New checkout flow
Card payment
Upon adding products to their basket and proceeding to checkout, pro-forma customers will be presented with the option to pay by card; selected by default. Your customer will be asked to enter their card details initially. These details will be saved for future use; making subsequent orders your customer places with you quicker to check out and pay for.
Fallback option
There’ll be an option to allow customers who don’t have access to a payment card to place their order and indicate the email address where they would like the invoice sending to; defaulting to their business’s usual invoice email address.
Credit terms customers
When placing their order, customers with credit terms will be presented with the option to ‘Use my credit account’; selected by default. They will also have the option to pay now by card if they so desired.
For orders where the customer doesn’t pay by card on checkout, you’ll have the same invoicing options as you do today. That is to either issue an invoice manually or send a card payment link (Stripe-hosted invoice). This is also true for orders you place on behalf of customers in Sellar.
Making an edit to a paid order
Should you need to make an edit to an order a customer has already paid for, we will provide you with two additional features for managing this.
Order total decrease - issue full or partial refunds
If you make an edit to an order which produces a total that is LESS than the amount paid - or you cancel the order entirely - we’ll process the necessary refund and return funds to the customer’s payment card.
Order total increase - make an additional charge
If you make an edit to an order which produces a total that is GREATER than the amount paid, you’ll have the ability to charge the customer’s payment card for the additional amount upon order confirmation (and after seeking permission from the customer beforehand).
Getting ready
Those of you with Stripe already connected to Sellar will begin offering pay-on-checkout automatically when it goes live early next year. If you don’t have Stripe connected yet - or if you don’t have a Stripe account - you can set this up from the integrations page on Sellar.
