Explore Kubernetes Data in the Ternary Reporting Engine

Today, we're excited to announce an extension of the Ternary Reporting Engine that now gives you the power to query the data sourced from your Kubernetes clusters in any way that you would like.

The data we're making available falls into two major categories:

Kubernetes Containers - CPU and Memory Request and Utilization Data from the applications and workloads you run inside your clusters. Think Pods, Deployments, ReplicaSets and DaemonSets. Use this to make sure your Kubernetes Containers are using what they're requesting and to motivate rightsizing at the application level.

Kubernetes Nodes - CPU and Memory Capacity and Utilization Data from the Nodes that make up your Kubernetes Clusters. Use this to make sure your Kubernetes Clusters are appropriately sized for the applications scheduled to them and to motivate rightsizing at the cluster level.

In each data source, cost, usage, and waste metrics are made available for you to analyze this from every perspective possible. Billing is the default data source to visualize all cloud usage and costs. To begin using Kubernetes Data in Reporting Engine, simply choose the Kubernetes Container or Kubernetes Node option in the new Data Source dropdown when creating a Report.

Then, choose the appropriate filters, groupings and measures corresponding to what you'd like to discover. We allow you to filter and group on clusters and namespaces. Choose the measures you'd like to chart, such as cost or CPU/memory usage/wastage and you are done. In this example, I am interested in exploring container cores requested and the associated core cost for all projects (I may decide to add a filter to drill down on a few specific projects)

Save your report and add it to a dashboard and build a collection of Kubernetes reports.

You can view a complete list of our container and node metric definitions here. We hope that this feature helps you better understand your Kubernetes clusters and workloads.

Update to Kubernetes Insights - Namespaces

It's important for DevOps teams to have quick visibility into Kubernetes namespaces to better understand and optimize usage. Our enhanced Kubernetes Insights now includes a new Namespaces selection.

Which returns all Namespaces in your environment and selecting an individual Namespace allows you to further drill into its associated cost and usage resources.

From here it's easy to follow the trail to the cluster hosting the Namespace.

Introducing Scoped Views

It's often the case you want to create and persist a well defined view of your cloud costs. Perhaps the view is at a line of business, product line, or team level composed of Ternary custom labels or GCP defined labels. You then want to apply views to one or more users in your organization and you want the views to persist, but give the users flexibility to disable the view or apply a different view. There may also be times when you want to empower users to create their own personal views. We hear you, and we're excited to introduce Scoped Views. As a Ternary organization administrator ("owner") or regular Ternary user, creating and managing Scoped Views is really easy.

As a Ternary administrator, you will find a new Scoped Views admin option.

Click the 'Create Scoped View' button to build your first Scoped View.

Give your scoped view a name that your users will see (and understand), define your scoped view filter based on one or more Ternary custom labels or GCP billing labels and apply the scoped view to your Ternary organization users. My scoped view will surface and isolate all spend in GCP region US-East-1. Taking a look at my Home graph, I see 'My Org Scoped View' applied and only spend associated with region US-East-1.

Clicking the scoped views button lets you enable / disable the organization scoped view, apply or remove any user created personal scoped views and create additional filters.

Similar to organization scoped views, you can create a personal scoped view. Swing over to your Ternary profile 'Settings' page to build your first personal scoped view. Learn more and read a few scoped views use cases in our Knowledge Base article.

Introducing Ternary Dark Mode

Are you fan of dark mode? We are too and we are excited to release this new UI mode. Enabling dark mode is super easy in your Profile settings page.

Once enabled, your interface should immediately change to dark mode.

Export Recommendations and Anomalies

We know at times it can be useful to export Compute, Kubernetes, and Storage optimization recommendations for various reasons such as integrating recommendations into your FinOps workflows. Beginning today, you can now export your recommendations as a CSV within the Compute, Kubernetes, and Storage Optimizations pages.

You can also do the same for any surfaced anomalies. We hope this enhancement enables your teams to make quicker decisions and take action.

Filtering Optimization Recommendations

We know getting teams to take action on surfaced optimization recommendations can be challenging for many different reasons. One customer requested improvement is the ability to quickly filter recommendation status (new, accepted, snoozed, as designed or implemented) and GCP project. We are happy to share that you are now able to filter by status, project, or both. The new filtering functionality works for all optimization Insights - Compute, Kubernetes, and Storage. In the example below, a filter has been set for both Status (new) and Project (two projects) resulting in 23 possible optimization opportunities.

Bulk User Onboarding

It is now possible to add multiple users to your tenant with a simple paste of a comma-delimited list of user email addresses. In the example below, you can view the addition of three new users. You can also type the addresses separating each with a comma. Select the permissions or role to assign the user list and submit. We hope this saves you a bit of time onboarding new Ternary users so you can focus on maximizing the return on every dollar of your cloud spend.

New Ternary Reporting Engine

We know that organizations have diverse reporting needs. Often times different stakeholders want to get visibility into areas that are relevant to their org and/or function in the business. To help facilitate better reporting, we've completely revamped our dashboard functionality by adding the following:

1) Grouping with multiple labels

2) Expansive filter operators.

3) Reporting on Net Costs

4) Custom Credit Granularity

5) Addition of Line and Stacked Bar Charts

6) Save Copies of Reports

7) CSV Exports

8) Added Usage Measure in addition to cost

9) Build reports based on invoice month to reconcile with your invoice

10) Resized reports on dashboards to fit 50% of the screen

11) Ability to move around widgets in a dashboard

12) Save Copies of Dashboards

Note: As part of the this change we will be deprecating our Dashboards section and replacing it with the Reporting Engine. Your previously created dashboards were automatically migrated to the new Reporting Engine. As part of new Reporting Engine, the following dashboard features have been sunset:

- Stacked Area Chart

- Gross Cost Totals

The new dashboard and reporting engine is available for use today! For more information to build your first dashboard and report, see Ternary Reporting Engine documentation.

Set Your Ternary Notification Preferences

Many customers have asked for the ability to modify the frequency and delivery of daily spend reports and the ability to enable or disable anomaly, budget, and recommendation notifications inside the Ternary user interface. We heard you. Today, we are happy to release a new feature allowing the modification of these settings within your Ternary user profile. You will find the the new 'Settings' feature under your Ternary login profile.

Which will take you to the new Settings configuration page

Spend by Region

We often hear from customers that visibility into spend across your geographical cloud footprint is important as you serve your applications closer to your users or to better understand the cost trade-offs across GCP regions. Beginning today, you can now surface the native GCP 'location' label in Ternary and apply it to your graphs and filters as shown in the Home graph below.
