MSP Admin Console

We’re excited to introduce a new Managed Service Provider (MSP) Admin console to help partners seamlessly manage customer tenants with Ternary. As of Wednesday, March 27th, partners are able to see ‘MSP Admin’ in the navigation pane.

With the MSP Admin console, partners can:

  • Invite new users to their MSP tenant with global admin permissions
  • Add, edit, and deactivate their customer tenants
  • Easily access all of their customer tenants
  • Add, revoke, edit users in any of their customer tenants

Note: this release applies to partners only and does not impact how channel customers (i.e., customers accessing Ternary via an MSP) use and navigate their tenants.

Update to Anomaly Detection Insights

Users are now able to see the relevant grouping categories (e.g., usage account, resource ID, tag etc.) driving the alert without the need to click into the details for each alert. The summary table now displays ‘Groupings’ as a column and the values relevant to each alert within that column. As with the other columns in the summary table, these values are sortable, enabling users to quickly and easily view the most impactful data for their organization.

Update to Dashboards - Report Tooltip

We have added the ability for users to input report descriptions within dashboards. Users can hover over the report name within a widget to see the description. If a user doesn’t add a description, then the tooltip will simply display the full name of the report when hovering over.

Update to Cloud Configuration - Added Context for Cloud Validation Errors

Under Admin > Clouds, we have added additional context regarding validation errors for your cloud configurations. If any of your configured clouds have a validation error, you will now see the following message, “We have detected one or more validation issues with your cloud configuration. Your configuration may be missing permissions or you may have yet to configure some features.” After reviewing the validation errors, you can open the cloud configuration modal to resolve those errors.

Update to Projected Spend Calculation

We have refined our algorithm for calculating ‘projected spend’ to help you more accurately forecast your cloud costs. This amount can be viewed in the projected field within a budget and in an alert email.

Before:

Monthly projected spend = (current spend) + ((average spend since month start) * (time remaining))

Now:

Monthly projected spend = (current spend) + ((average spend over the last 30 days) * (time remaining))

Introducing Cost Allocation

We’re excited to announce Cost Allocation, a new feature accessible under the “Cost Assist” heading in the side navigation. This feature allows users to create, update, and trigger cost reallocations. Cost allocation is an important FinOps capability for organizations that want to perform accurate chargeback or showback to their respective teams. It ensures that teams receive their "fully loaded" costs to run their applications, products, platforms etc.

Ternary Cost Allocation allows you to:

  • Create rules to be executed immediately and rules that can be scheduled to run daily
  • Restrict rules to a specified date range
  • Filter rules to execute against a label such as a specific application, project, team etc.
  • Choose to reallocate by fixed proportions (statically weighted) or in proportion to each target’s share (dynamically weighted)

Learn more about Cost Allocation in this support article.

Updates to GCP Committed Spend Manager

We have made several enhancements to our GCP Committed Use Discount (CUD) capabilities. First, the Committed Spend Manager now reflects an updated chart style to better align with the rest of the platform. Within this chart, users can now select a custom data range when planning for CUDs within a 30-day timeframe.

Additionally, we have introduced two types of warnings:

  1. Ternary will now warn users if spend-based CUD recommendations are not current due to an interruption in data being supplied by Google Cloud.
  2. For resource-based CUDS only, there is now a warning that indicates when there is a conflicting rightsizing recommendation to a given CUD recommendation. The warning icon links to the corresponding Insights page for further investigation. You can see the warning in the Recommendations table of the Committed Spend Manager, as well as the recommendation modal.
