Introducing Cost Allocation

We’re excited to announce Cost Allocation, a new feature accessible under the “Cost Assist” heading in the side navigation. This feature allows users to create, update, and trigger cost reallocations. Cost allocation is an important FinOps capability for organizations that want to perform accurate chargeback or showback to their respective teams. It ensures that teams receive their "fully loaded" costs to run their applications, products, platforms etc.

Ternary Cost Allocation allows you to:

  • Create rules to be executed immediately and rules that can be scheduled to run daily
  • Restrict rules to a specified date range
  • Filter rules to execute against a label such as a specific application, project, team etc.
  • Choose to reallocate by fixed proportions (statically weighted) or in proportion to each target’s share (dynamically weighted)

Learn more about Cost Allocation in this support article.

Updates to GCP Committed Spend Manager

We have made several enhancements to our GCP Committed Use Discount (CUD) capabilities. First, the Committed Spend Manager now reflects an updated chart style to better align with the rest of the platform. Within this chart, users can now select a custom data range when planning for CUDs within a 30-day timeframe.

Additionally, we have introduced two types of warnings:

  1. Ternary will now warn users if spend-based CUD recommendations are not current due to an interruption in data being supplied by Google Cloud.
  2. For resource-based CUDS only, there is now a warning that indicates when there is a conflicting rightsizing recommendation to a given CUD recommendation. The warning icon links to the corresponding Insights page for further investigation. You can see the warning in the Recommendations table of the Committed Spend Manager, as well as the recommendation modal.

Updates to Dashboard Management

Similar to our new Report Management functionality, Dashboards can now be tagged and favorited with the ability to quickly filter using the drop downs at the top of the table or by clicking on a tag. Additionally, we have added new system dashboards which are available to all customers. These dashboards are configured with commonly viewed data that can be used on their own or copied and customized to fit your needs. They can be found by filtering for Owner = system-admin@ternary.app , Visibility = Ternary or by using the "System" tag.

Update to Anomaly Alerting Thresholds

A few weeks ago, we announced that users now have the ability to designate alerts based on an exact increase in spend over a period of time. We have now further enhanced our Alert Tracking rule configuration to allow you to designate both a minimum dollar and percentage threshold, rather than either/or.

  • Additional date selection options available - You can now select from the following options: yesterday, 7d, 30d, 90d, MTD, YTD, or a custom date range.
  • Removed “Other” aggregation from the “Total Cost Breakdown.” Previously, users could only see their top 15 values, but now you can see the full breakdown of costs with a paginated table.

Reporting Engine Layout Update

Starting today, you will see a new layout when using the Ternary Reporting Engine.  This updated experience has moved the parameter selections to the right hand side of your screen with the ability to collapse your configuration to see a full screen display of your table and chart. With this change, we have moved the case management button to the top navigation bar for all pages. Additionally when selecting your groupings and measure, you can now choose multiple values before closing the selector to increase efficiency. We hope you are as excited about this change as we are!

Prescriptive Threshold Anomaly Alerting

Users now have the ability to designate alerts based on an exact increase in spend over a period of time. For some time now Ternary has employed AI/ML to identify anomalous changes in cost that could then be further filtered by users to meet specific thresholds. This technology enables users to “automagically” take things like trends and seasonality into account, but we also realize that users/organizations, for several reasons, may want to alert on thresholds without the lens of AI/ML. Now, when creating alerting rules, users have the ability to bypass AI/ML anomaly detection.
