Chargeback You Can Defend. AI ROI You Can Prove.

Chargeback is only as credible as the labels beneath it. Spend without a department, product, or budget code sits outside the unified technology P&L and outside anyone’s accountability. AI raises the stakes further as boards want to know what an AI investment returns, and answering that requires cost and revenue in the same frame.

Ternary’s MCP server now answers both questions in plain language, from the AI assistant your team already uses. ERPs are technology-blind and FinOps tools are Engineering-owned. These two new tools extend Ternary’s judgment infrastructure, built for Finance, into every conversation about technology investment:

  • Label coverage: See how much spend any Custom Label covers over a period, with each provider ranked by the size of its gap.
  • Unallocated spend, located: Pinpoint the 20 largest account and service pairs carrying unlabeled spend, so remediation starts where the dollars are.
  • Label hygiene: Surface likely misspellings, placeholder values such as “unknown,” values outside your approved list, and spend missing a required companion label.
  • AI ROI: Weigh AI cost against revenue for the whole tenant, or by product, team, or any Custom Label.

Every figure is period-close compatible. Unallocated spend is defined exactly as a “not set” filter in the Reporting Engine, so the numbers reconcile to your reports. AI cost comes from Ternary’s own classification of each billing row, not from service names or tags. When revenue is missing for the period, Ternary reports AI cost alone and names the gap rather than estimating a ratio. That is finance-grade attribution, held to the same rigor as every other line of the P&L.

Connect the Ternary MCP server to your AI assistant and ask, for example: “How much of last quarter’s spend has no department label?” or “Show AI cost against revenue by product.”

Your AI Assistant Can Now Act on What It Finds

Since launch, the Ternary MCP server has let Finance and FinOps ask any AI assistant questions against live technology P&L data. No more exports or stale CSVs. That was read-only by design: the assistant could see everything you could see, and nothing more.

Now it can do something with what it finds. When an assistant surfaces an answer worth keeping, like a budget at risk or a cost driver behind a dashboard swing, it can save that query as a report directly in Ternary, so it's there for the next period-close review without you re-create it by hand.

What's new:

  • Save reports from a conversation. Ask a question, get an answer, and tell the assistant to keep it. It's saved privately to your account and appears in your saved reports, ready to reference, share, or build a dashboard on.
  • Savings recommendations, surfaced on demand. The assistant can now pull optimization recommendations from Ternary's Optimization Hub. Get idle resources, rightsizing, and other savings opportunities ranked by estimated monthly savings, filterable by provider. The same view you see on the Recommendations page, now answerable in a sentence.

Same governance model as before: OAuth-authenticated, permission-scoped to exactly what the requesting user can already see. No new access, no new risk surface, just a shorter distance between a question and an ROI decision.

Access: Already connected? These tools are available now. Otherwise, learn how to connect your AI assistant.

Spotting a variance after close is reporting. Spotting it in time to change course is judgment infrastructure.

Every budget has its own narrative. By recognizing the details early on, we can transform a variance into an informed decision rather than an unexpected surprise.

The budget detail page has been rebuilt from a simple status check into a full analytical workspace.

Where you once saw three charts, you now get a complete view built for real financial review:

  • Spend vs. budget analysis - See performance against budget with the depth needed to explain variance, not just flag it.
  • Projections - Forward-looking spend trajectory using the latest AI/ML models, so you know where a budget is heading before period close, not after.
  • Variance drivers - Surface the specific changes in spend responsible for variance, down to the cause.
  • Linked reports and materials - Attach reports from the Ternary Reporting Engine and outside materials directly to a budget, so context lives where the review happens.
  • Configuration, visible in place - Review how a budget is built without leaving the page, giving all users the context of the budget.
  • Flexible time horizons - Filter the entire view across any time period your review cycle requires.

This extends across the hierarchy: search finds any sub-budget instantly, and both budgets and sub-budgets can be renamed to match how Finance actually talks about the business.

Alerts now go deeper, too. Users can now subscribe to sub-budgets directly, and see every subscriber and threshold set across a budget and its sub-budgets in one place.

This is judgment infrastructure for technology investment. A budget page designed to meet the level of scrutiny your business needs to make informed decisions.

To access the new view, select Budgets from the left-hand navigation, then select any budget to explore the new detail view.

Zero In on the Data That Drives the Decision

Every report contains signal and noise. The ability to separate them quickly is what turns a data table into a decision.

Limit Displayed Results brings a new level of precision to the Ternary Reporting Engine. Now available directly in the filter bar, you can limit displayed results to exactly the rows that matter. You can now filter on any measure in your query, not just the top one.

  • Show Top N - surface the highest or lowest contributors across any measure
  • Greater than, less than, or equal to - zero in on rows with totals that meet a specific threshold, filtering out everything that doesn't

Whether you're isolating the ten most expensive AI models, finding every product line where unit cost exceeds a target, or stripping out negligible spend to focus a board presentation, the Limit Displayed Results filter puts that control directly in the report, without post-processing in a spreadsheet.

Limit Displayed Results is available now in the filter bar of any report.

Configure Ternary to Match How You Read Data

Configure Ternary to Match How You Read Data

Ternary surfaces data for Finance leaders, FinOps practitioners, and Engineering teams alike. Each reads numbers differently. Date formats, shortening conventions, negative notation, fiscal calendars: the details that make data immediately legible to one person can create friction for another.

Every user can now configure exactly how data is displayed across the platform, so the numbers you see always reflect the conventions you work in.

Data & Regional Preferences

  • Date format - choose from regional formats including DD/MM/YYYY, MM/DD/YYYY, and more
  • First day of week - align weekly views to your organizational standard
  • Region preset - apply a regional default in one selection
  • Fiscal calendar - toggle to use your organization's fiscal calendar instead of the standard calendar year

Number & Currency Preferences

  • Convention preset - apply Finance, European, or other standard number formatting conventions in one click
  • Decimal and thousands separators - configure to match your regional or organizational standard
  • Shortening style - choose between K, M, MM, or full numbers depending on your preference
  • Negative notation - display negatives as parentheses (1,234) or with a minus sign, consistent with how you present numbers

Every preference is set per user. To configure yours, open the menu under your name and avatar in the top right and make Ternary speak your language.

Alert on Any Measure, Including Your Own

Alert on Any Measure, Including Your Own

The metrics your business runs on are more specific than a single line item. A custom KPI tied to a product line. A unit cost tracked against a target. AI token consumption measured against expected usage. These are the numbers that matter, and now you can alert on all of them.

Alerts now support any measure available in a report, including custom measures. If you can report on it in Ternary, you can alert on it.

You can also create multiple alerts on the same report with each watching a different measure, with its own threshold or anomaly detection configuration. A single report can now power an entire layer of monitoring without duplication.

  • Custom business KPIs - alert when a measure you've defined crosses a threshold meaningful to your business
  • AI token consumption - surface anomalous token usage before it compounds into a cost problem
  • Unit economics - monitor cost-per-unit measures and get notified when they drift

To get started, open any saved report in the Reporting Engine, select the Create Alert bell icon, and choose the measure you want to monitor.

Alerts Rooted in the Data That Matters

Spend moves fast. A service scales unexpectedly. An AI workload runs hot. A cost category that was stable last quarter starts climbing. Alerts surface these movements the moment they happen, not when someone thinks to look.

Ternary supports two modes of alerting, now created directly from any report in the Reporting Engine:

  • Anomaly Detection - a machine learning model trains on 90 days of your historical spend and flags deviations the moment daily cost falls outside its expected range. Each service, account, or dimension grouping gets its own independently trained model, so a spike in one area doesn't drown out signal elsewhere.
  • Threshold Alerting - set a fixed daily spend limit on any report and get notified the moment it's crossed.

Both deliver notifications via email or Slack, so the right people are informed wherever they work.

Alerts are now created directly from the report they monitor. Open any saved report, select the bell icon at the top, and the filters, groupings, and scope are inherited automatically into your alerts. There is no separate configuration to manage and no ambiguity about what data is being watched. Set multiple alerts at different thresholds to inform the right people at the right time.

To get started, open any saved report in the Reporting Engine or create a new alert from the Alerts page located on the left-hand navigation.

Turn Any Report Into a Board-Ready Dashboard in Minutes

Ternary Dashboards have been redesigned to make building and editing faster, more flexible, and built around a single source of truth.

Any saved report can now be added to a dashboard and configured at the widget level — change the visualization, change the grouping, adjust the date scope — without touching the underlying report or creating duplicates. From there:

  • Multi-select reports to add several widgets to a dashboard in a single flow
  • Drag to enter edit mode on any widget directly from the dashboard canvas
  • Per-widget visualization and grouping — present the same report as a table, bar chart, waterfall, or any other visualization without creating a duplicate report
  • Divider widgets to section and structure your dashboard the way a financial review needs to be read
  • Updated widget headers and three-dot menu for faster access to edit, clone, and remove actions

One dataset. One source of truth. Built and edited in minutes.

To get started, open any Dashboard and select Add Widget or select Save to Dashboard from a report. All existing dashboards can take advantage of the new features, as well.

Board-Ready YoY Analysis, Now in the Reporting Engine

Technology spend is a board-level line item. But until now, analyzing it the way boards expect, year-over-year with full annual context, required exporting data and rebuilding it elsewhere.

Ternary's Reporting Engine now supports viewing your spend at a yearly granularity. View your total technology investment for 2023, 2024, and 2025 in one place, or compare year-to-date figures with past years. Identify changes in spending growth, shifts, or reallocations across your portfolio.Combine it with Custom Labels and your unified technology P&L to provide the annual trend analysis the board requests.

Year-over-year is no longer a spreadsheet exercise.

To use it, open any report in the Ternary Reporting Engine and select Year from time granularity picker.

Waterfall Chart Visualization - Now Available

Waterfall Chart Visualization - Now Available

The Waterfall chart is the native language of financial accountability. It communicates cost movement to the business and the board. By bringing this construct into Ternary's Reporting Engine, technology spend is now expressible in the same format applied to headcount variance, real estate cost bridges, and capital allocation reviews.

What you can do with it

  • Visualize cumulative billed cost build-up across categories in a single, unambiguous view
  • Identify which cost categories are driving the largest incremental spend within any time period
  • Support unified technology P&L reporting with a visualization that maps directly to how cost bridges are presented in financial reviews

How to access it

Open any report in the Ternary Reporting Engine, select Waterfall from the visualization picker. Finance-grade attribution of your technology investment is just a click away.
